The mission of the Directorate of Békés County Museums (Munkácsy Mihály Museum – Békéscsaba, Erkel Ferenc Museum – Gyula) is:
- To explore and to collect, to conserve and to process scientifically and to present the natural and archaeological and ethnographic and historic relics that can be found on the territory of Békés county.
- To nurture the material and the spiritual cultures of the ethnic minorities living in the area, to preserve the objects, tools, books and manuscripts, works of art and industrial products characteristic of the past and of the folklore of the county.
- To enrich the memories and the relics and the works and the family relics of the creators who have been significant in the history and the culture and the economic life and fine arts of Békés county, especially the bequest of Mihály Munkácsy.
- To make the knowledge and the treasure of the history of Békés county collected in over hundred years available to the public and to spread it to the population of the county and to the visitors.
